I ONCE believed that all the kisses a woman gives us and takes were predestined for us by fate’s decree from the beginning of time.
I took kisses and gave them with such seriousness in those days, as though obliged to fulfil deeds of necessity.
I now know that the kiss is, like so much else, superfluous, and with lighter heart I kiss, unbelieving, to superfluity.
